Elevate to Higher Performance Swimming with Brain-Based Applied Neurology
WHAT IS BRAIN-BASED APPLIED NEUROLOGY TRAINING?
Brain-based applied neurology training for swimmers is a specialized approach that focuses on enhancing athletic performance by optimizing the brain and nervous system's function. This approach targets the neural pathways that control movement, coordination, balance, and reaction time.
HOW DOES IT WORK TO IMPROVE SWIMMING?
Regular swimming has been shown to improve memory, cognitive function, immune response and forge new neural connections in the brain.
By incorporating the principles of applied neurology, it influences the brain, various bodily systems and taps into the neurological framework to enhance swimming performance.
WHAT ARE THE 3 SIMPLE STEPS TO BRAIN-BASED TRAINING?
1
Neurological Assessment
The process begins with an assessment of the swimmer's nervous system to identify areas of weakness or inefficiency. This might include evaluating balance, vision, proprioception (body awareness), and reflexes. The goal is to understand how well the swimmer's brain communicates with their body during swimming.
2
Targeted Neurological Drills
Based on the assessment, specific drills and exercises are designed to stimulate and strengthen the neural pathways. These drills may involve:
3
Integration with Physical Training
The neurological drills are integrated with traditional swim training to ensure that the improvements in brain function translate into better performance in the water. This might involve combining mental exercises with specific stroke work, starts, and turns, or using visualization techniques to reinforce neural connections

We cannot thank Maja enough for Sebastian’s lessons. Sebastian has had quite a few swimming teachers and Maja was by far the best- not only did she manage to hold his attention at the age of 4 but also taught him some pretty technical swimming techniques. We were amazed at how Maja got him to do all this and his swimming got so much better over the course of lessons he had. Not to mention Sebastian had great fun with Maja during his lessons. We couldn’t recommend her more and wish we could find someone as good in England.

Initially, I started lessons at age 63. I never had the opportunity to learn because most municipal pools were segregated in the rural South when I was growing up.
Maja taught me differently from all of my previous swim instructors. She knows the anatomy and physiology of the musculoskeletal system in depth and uses this knowledge in all of her classes. I never thought I could float or swim without fins, however, Maja taught me to do both.
She is a very exceptional instructor with an infectious personality. I highly recommend her to anyone who desires to learn or improve their swimming.

Maja is an amazing swim coach!! I signed both of my girls up for swim lessons this year with Maja. Avery who is 7 had the basics but really needed to build confidence in the pool. Avery thoroughly enjoyed her time with Maja improving her skills. She has much more confidence in the pool and loves showing off all the swim strokes she has learned. Lila, 4 needed to learn how to swim. Lila was a bit timid in the pool at first but warmed up to Maja really quickly. She keeps the lessons very fun while focusing on the foundational skills needed to be a good swimmer. Lila was swimming after 3 lessons!!! We have enjoyed a lovely summer practicing all our new skills. I highly recommend Maja for private swim lessons.

Maja played an instrumental role in helping me develop as a swimmer. She systematically broke down my stroke, taught me drills on how to improve my technique, and helped me gain the confidence I needed to get back to practice after an injury.
Now I am practicing three times a week and even trying my hand at butterfly and breast while experiencing reasonable progression.

Maja is an amazing teacher. I met her at a USMS stroke clinic and spoke to her afterwards about private lessons. Luckily, she said yes. I have benefited over the years from many coaches, YouTube videos and tips from people. But Maja has a fundamentally different and very holistic approach that led to a philosophical change in the way I view swimming - and the way I swim! It's not easy to let go of ingrained habits, but with Maja for the first time I actually got what it means when people say, "Feel the water," which is something I'd heard for years but never truly felt. I can't recommend her highly enough.

Maja, Thank you for the work over the past year providing swim lessons to our 5-year-old son.
As you know, he came from one of the local swim franchises where his progress had plateaued. After a few lessons with you, it was clear that making the move was the right choice. Our son quickly grew comfortable being in the water and was energetic when learning new techniques from week to week. He has grown into a little “fish” as he loves being in the water, he can finally swim several yards on his own and continues to show an interest in learning more.

As my rising high schooler finally decided to join his high school swim team, we were highly recommended to coach Maja by a dear friend, and coincidentally by many neighbors via NextDoor. I reached out to coach Maja to work with our 14 year old son on improving his swim strokes, endurance and techniques for races. After hearing how much he enjoying working with coach Maja, my husband decided to see it for himself by sitting on the swim deck for many lessons later. He was impressed, he then asked coach Maja to work with our 6 year old son.
Coach Maja has turned our sons into aspiring and enthusiastic swimmers. Our high school swimmer got his Varsity Letter after his first season. Our 6 year old son now can independently swim safely in the pool without us being “helicopter parents” and he looks forward to join a youth swim team. This family is forever grateful for coach Maja and her dedication to train our boys.

Coach Maja taught and worked with me numerous times on my technique. She helped me improving my flip turn and a straighter positioning on streamline to cut my time down. Before working with coach Maja, I struggled with butterfly stroke and I had thought this might not be the stroke for me. She pushed me to my full potential and eventually I became a much stronger and confident swimmer. She is an extraordinary coach. If you want to get exponentially better, get trained by Coach Maja.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Dive Into Knowledge: Essential FAQs on Brain-based Training
Brain-based training focuses on enhancing the brain and nervous system's function to improve physical performance.
Unlike traditional swim training that primarily targets muscle strength, endurance, and technique, brain-based training works on optimizing neural pathways that control movement, coordination, balance, and reaction time.
By improving how your brain communicates with your body, you can achieve more efficient and effective swimming performance.
During the initial assessment, we'll evaluate various aspects of your neurological function, including balance, coordination, vision, and proprioception (your body's awareness of its position in space). This assessment helps us identify areas where your nervous system may need support or enhancement. The results will guide us in creating a personalized training program tailored to your unique needs and goals.
Yes, brain-based training can significantly improve both your speed and technique. By targeting the neural mechanisms that control movement, this approach helps you refine your strokes, improve coordination, and react more quickly to changes in the water. Over time, these improvements lead to faster swim times and more efficient, fluid movements.
The timeline for seeing results can vary depending on your starting point and the consistency of your training. Some swimmers notice improvements in coordination, balance, and focus within a few weeks, while more significant changes in technique and speed may take a few months. The key is regular practice and applying the neurological drills both in and out of the water.
Absolutely! Brain-based training is beneficial for swimmers of all levels, including beginners. For non-swimmers, this approach can help you build a strong neurological foundation that supports better learning of swimming techniques, faster skill acquisition, and greater confidence in the water. The personalized nature of the training means it can be adapted to suit your specific needs, whether you're just starting or looking to enhance existing skills.
To achieve transformative and long-lasting results, consistent practice is essential. This means regularly performing the neurological drills and integrating them into your swim training. Typically, participants commit to a few sessions per week, with ongoing assessments to track progress and adjust the program as needed. The more dedicated you are to the process, the more profound the improvements will be in your swimming performance.
